ALDBURY.
Valiant Trooper (Trooper Road, Alderbury Common, Herts. From A41 at Tring take right turn to Aldbury) (01442) 851203. A great pub, but not in the best part of this village premier-league photogenic village in excellent rambling country just off the ancient Ridgeway Path. The pub was once called the Royal Oak but it changed its name in 1803, possibly because the Duke of Wellington reputedly met his troops here to discuss tactics. The inside is originally beamed and there is a woodburner in the inglenook that warms the ramblers feet. There are also plenty of tiles in the bar. One bar is no smoking at lunchtimes. The middle bar is carpeted nicely, but has exposed brickwork for period detail. The bar menu is modest (three cheese ploughman's £3.50; liver, bacon and onion casserole £5; fruit crumble £2) but ingredients are well chosen and genuinely homemade. Beyond open sandwiches, salads and omelettes you might find a high-protein mixed grill, cottage pie, Kashmir chicken and a fresh fish of the day. Desserts are filling with offerings of bread and butter pudding. If you find the bar menu doesn't fill you up, you can try the menu in Troopers Eating House - a converted stable block that once served as Boy Scouts' hut and local bikers' club. Two guest beers were on at the time to supplement the regulars of Bass and John Smith's. these were Fuller's London Pride and Youngs Special. Children are welcome in eating areas until 9pm. Wheelchair access is good here as is it to the garden and patio. A policy of no music helps with conversations. Open 11.30-11, Sun 12-10.30. Bar food all week 12-2 (2.30 Sun); Mon-Sat 6.30-9.15. in Troupers Tue-Sun 12-2, Tue-Sat 7.30-10. No accommodation here but try :Royal Hotel, Tring Station, Tring, HP23 5QR. 1 km from the centre of Aldbury. Price Over £30 for en-suite.
