The Keelman

The Keelman pub a friendly family real ale pub, at the entrance to Newburn Riverside Country Park.

This renovated 1854 Victorian water pumping station was converted into the Keelman pub in 1996.

The Keelman pub is a traditional style pub boasting an open design which is ideal for disabled visitors. It is well known for its excellent - traditional - food and fine ales which are brewed in the adjoining - Big Lamp - brewery using traditional methods. Beers on at the time were: Bitter, Premium and Summerhill.

The Big Lamp Brewery is the north east's oldest micro brewery. Established now for over 15 years. It has become one of the regions favourite traditional breweries and has regular brewery tours.

Food is served here both lunch and evenings. The restaurant is a light and airy room with a small number of tables in the balcony area for diners who prefer more privacy.

Food from a traditional menu is cooked using fresh local produce. The menu changes on a regular basis, ranging from sandwiches to lunches and dinners.

The Keelman Lodge has purpose-built accommodation standing in the Keelman's grounds. There are 6 bedrooms with en-suite facilities, each containing 1 double and 1 single bed.

A great attraction for the children is the adventure playground designed for tots to teens.

Great beer, great staff, great location, great grub. Enough said. Bye. (Frank Bateson).

On Saturday 7th December my wife and I visited the Keelman, recommended by a local hotel we were staying at. "On spec" we called to try and get an evening meal and although you were fully booked you managed to squeeze us in on "early doors". The food, Steak and Ale Pie, was superb. The staff young or experienced were helpful, attentive and made us feel welcome in spite of their work load. They didn't rush or rush us and gave us every opportunity to enjoy our meal. Thank you for your hospitality, quality and service. Our accommodation made a grave mistake in recommending you as we shall try to book a room at the Keelman when next in the area. As for the beer - if I had not been driving I would certainly have had more than one, well brewed . well kept and nicely served. (K & S Fieldhouse)
