With a decidedly upmarket feel, the three or four comfortable rooms in this civilised family-run pub have good oak chairs and an individual mix of tables (many of them set for dining), and use attractive fabrics for the wood-railed curtains and pew cushions. Down some steps the charming no smoking country dining room has a dresser and longcase clock. Log fires include one in a well polished kitchen range and paintings by a local artist line the walls. But it's the well presented often interesting food (Meals and snacks till 10pm) that draws most comments from visitors: soup, lunchtime sandwiches like BLT or smoked chicken and avocado served with salad and sauteed potatoes, crabcakes with tomato salsa, smoked haddock with bubble and squeak and a poached egg, steak, kidney, mushroom and Guinness pudding, baked aubergine with wild mushrooms, roast half shoulder of lamb or grilled salmon with a coriander and dijon mustard sauce, honey roast duck breast with a red wine and ginger sauce, 8oz fillet steak, and puddings such as rhubarb and ginger crumble or apple and almond tart; popular Sunday roasts; polite service; children over 10 in restaurant. A good range of well kept beers includes Cheriton Pots Ale, Fullers London Pride, Gales HSB, and guests from breweries such as Brewery on Sea, Hampshire Brewery, Harveys, Hogs Back or Pilgrim, farm ciders, and a thoughtful little wine list with a changing choice by the glass. Dominoes, shove-ha'penny, cribbage, backgammon, and other games like scrabble, Jenga, bagatelle, and mah jong. At the back there are attractive blue wood tables and chairs on a terrace with a pergogola.?Jazz on Sunday evenings.
