The Central

The Central had been a very run-down pub, with a lovely bar and back fitting in the Buffet. The owner had a flat above and, way back, the upper rooms on the first and second floors were a workers lodgings.

At one time, part of the first floor was a nightclub! But the state of the upper floors was awful.

In the loft, contractors found almost a metre deep layer of decomposed pigeons and pigeon droppings – probably going back to 1856 when the Central was built!

But now the pub has undergone a new-life-creation. The upper floors have been stripped out and turned into function rooms of different sizes, with 2 being very suitable as live music venues. Part of the roof has being stripped away and a new one installed, with a new rooftop terrace bar added too.

It serves up to 12 real ales and two of cider plus some continental beers on draught.

The Central is part of the Head of Steam group and is situated on the Gateshead side of the River Tyne, between the Tyne and High Level Bridges.

Food is served here all day.

No accommodation here.

Not far from the metro stop.
