The Fox Inn

Located off A356 Crewkerne - Dorchester Road, on outskirts of the village on the Halstock road. Alternatively, the Fox Inn is 5 miles off A37 Yeovil - Dorchester road, signposted to Halstock one mile out of Yeovil. The Fox is a sixteenth century thatched pub in heart of countryside - as a pub should be. Flagstone floors, beams 2 inglenook fireplaces (with fires burning!) sporting prints, stuffed owls, foxes etc. Loads of pictures to look at. Blue gingham curtains and tablecloths. Tons of atmosphere. Cosy. One main bar, one small bar/eating area, separate dining room, and kitchen/dining room. There is a conservatory (flower filled) with one large oak table to seat up to 18 people - used all year round for private parties or different smaller groups of people. There is accommodation here and breakfast is served in the conservatory in summer, in the dining room in winter. Disabled access for eating is good (can park directly outside the pub if disabled), but not for the toilets. Toilets in general good, but tucked away off the conservatory. Food is served 12-2pm daily; 7-9pm or 9.30pm Friday/Saturday. Open every day for lunch and dinner. Opening hours 12 til about 3pm, probably 5pm Sat/Sunday (they close when everyone leaves) 7pm til 11, or 12 with supper licence. The food is good, fresh and cooked to order - including very good fish and seafood, game, local Dorset Lamb and Beef plus vegetarian dishes. No Microwaves or Chips. Good portions, no extra charge for potatoes and veg. The Fox is "Dorset Dining Pub of the Year - Good Pub Guide 2000", "Dorset Inn (Award) - Good Food Guide 2000", "Best Pub - West Country Cooking 1999". Service is also very efficient and friendly. Beers are all kept in good condition with a refrigerated cellar. Spare lines are cleaned for each new barrel. The Fox is always being complimented on quality and condition, hence the awards. Beers on at the time: Exmoor Ale 3.7% or Exmoor Fox 4.2% (Exmoor Brewery), London Pride 4.2% (Fullers) and Stowford Press Cider. Accommodation : 3 bedrooms, en-suite. 1 Twin, 2 double, all furnished with antiques. Comfortable beds. Large cast-iron baths, one with shower inc. All centrally heated. Beverage making facilities. TV. Four Diamonds from AA. Very comfortable and cosy.
