The Elephant and Castle

The Elephant and Castle lies in the heart of Bloxham and is the centre for most local activities. It is believed to date from the Mid 1500's but it is not mentioned in books until some 200 years later. In those early days, it would have brewed its own ale and certainly had its own bakehouse until 1900. The oven is still intact and can be seen in the Lounge.

The Elephant was built as a staging post and straddled the Banbury to Chipping Norton Turnpike that ran through the archway. It was said that when the doors in the Archway were closed, (the hinges can still be seen) then the road and the North Village were closed too.

The Elephant was purchased by the Hook Norton Brewery Company over 100 years ago and is now one of their premier tenancies. The Brewery is situated some 10 miles away and brews some of the finest Real Ales available in the country.

In 1997 at the Brewing Industry's International Awards, their Best Bitter won the Gold Medal in their class and later was awarded The Highest Accolade - The 1998 Champion of Champions.

The Elephant has a most beautiful flower filled Courtyard and Garden where you may sit and enjoy our reasonably priced Lunches (Rump Steak; Steak & Kidney Pie - Lasagne - Haddock - or Sausage, Egg, Beans & Chips) and Beers, it also has a raised lawn where Aunt Sally - that unique Oxfordshire game is played.

The large wood floored bar is the Locals Bar and although there is no juke box, this is where Darts and Shovehalfpenny on a 100 year old board is played and is looked over by a large sawn stone fireplace surrounding a flaming fire.

The two roomed carpeted Lounge has been lovingly restored but still maintains that charm of yesteryear. This room has a bar-billiards table and a large Inglenook fireplace where, in the cold winters, a large log fire burns.

Children catered for.
